The adult children were heartbroken even though they knew the day was coming. Their beloved dad who had been diagnosed with dementia no longer knew who they were most of the time. It crushed their hearts to see the blank and absent look on his face as he was searching for their identity and sometimes, it seemed, even for his own identity.
The children decided to keep dad at home and receive homecare.
Their homecare service is where they first found out about Music & Memory.
Although the use of music for medical patients has been known to be helpful, Music & Memory is unique in the world of music therapies.
In our Music & Memory program, we work with the family of each dementia client to create a playlist of the client’s favorite music. Community Care downloads the music onto an iPod designated for that client. The iPod is then brought to the client’s home by our employee, who assists the client and gives the client time to listen to this favorite music. The music awakens the brain to the client’s memories.
Eyes Brighten, Faces Light Up, Toes Tap
When a dementia patient listens on these iPods their eyes brighten, faces light up, toes tap, and some even sing along.
And the effects of listening continues for a time after the listening session. They are able to answer questions and speak with their own personality shining through.
These Music & Memory sessions in some cases can reduce the level of need for some depression medications. The patient is able to maintain a higher level of social functioning with both his caregiver and with his family members. They are happier, calmer, and more responsive to their environment.
Although there are other homecare agencies in the Northeast Philadelphia area, CommUnity Care stands out as a Certified Music & Memory Agency.
Here at CommUnity Care, we care deeply for our clients and want to see them social and happy to the best of their ability. We believe that the Music & Memory program is part of the therapeutic plan for clients with Alzheimer’s or dementia giving them joy and increased connection with their family and friends.
